Smooring Prayers

At one point in human history, prayers were rendered, sung, and held for every element of life.  Every act in the course of a day had a prayer that accompanied it.  The Carmina Gadelica has a rich tradition of Celtic prayers from the simple pieces of daily life.  I stumbled onto this smooring prayer sung and recorded on YouTube.

Smooring was the bringing together of the peat fire coals and embers in the evening fire and holding them over until the dawn.  As the new day broke, a new fire was brought forth from the embers of the day gone by.  What a gentle reminder of the power of life itself.

Below is a Smooring prayer from the Gadelica and also the link for a sung version.

Smooring Prayer

I save this fire,
as noble Christ saves;
Mary on the top of the house
and Brigid in its centre;
the eight strongest angels
in Heaven preserving this house
and keeping its people safe.
