Mirror Neurons and Building the World around Us

"We weave a shelter around us with the fields of thought, emotion,
and desire we generate from within and project out onto the world.
These fields we are weaving create the “me” of our lives. They become
what we consider to be the personality. In a real sense they precede us
and are still around when we leave. If we fail to cut down an inappropriate
logismoi by returning to our practice, it enters the neural field of our
communications about prayer.

Think of the affect certain people have when they walk into a room:
some liven things up, while others shut down conversation. Some people
exude an atmosphere of love and union, while others exude an atmosphere
of distraction and chaos.

Scientists have discovered a whole “mirror” system within us. The
mirroring begins with the “mirror neuron” which assumes the behavior
and emotion in the immediate environment and then reflects it.
Individuals mirror “the other” as if it were themselves. It is how we pick
up feelings of conflict and dis-continuity. If someone is saying something
with their mouth that they are in conflict with in their heart, their
body language will relay that information to us and our mirror neurons
will pick up the disconnect. It is that feeling that something does not
ring true or is just a bit off.

If we are presenting ill-health and darkened logismoi, we are setting
the tone for the people around us. We are leading them into the
valley of the shadow of distraction and separation."

Interior Space

The cultivation of an interior space of prayer is more than a simple luxury of our spiritual lives.  It is a necessity.  Jesus encouraged us to go into our prayer closet and there pray to our Father in secret.  Why the cloak and dagger approach to prayer?

Primarily, Jesus was helping us to remove any sense of show from our prayer life.  When we worship in the temple or the pew we can show off our piety and puff up our ego.  In the prayer closet, there is no show.  I also believe that the isolation of a prayer closet - a cave of the heart - is another way for us to enter into the silence and stillness of God.  We may not always be able to go on retreat, but if we create an interior place of prayer, we always have a place to retreat to.

This modeling of an interior space by encouraging us to go to a prayer closet in secret, is also helping us to establish the idea and notion that we have a place within in which God can TABERNACLE with us.  God can dwell in us, meet with us, abide with us in this inner closet.

The cave of the heart is the place of meeting.

Go there often and wander.
